Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition characterized by the compression or squeezing of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel on the palm side of the hand. The median nerve is one of the hand's major nerves. Excessive strain or pressure on it results in symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, and hand weakness. It can affect both hands, and genetics is thought to be the main risk factor for this disease. Many patients' carpal tunnel syndrome worsens over time. If left unchecked, normal hand and finger movements can disappear, resulting in loss of sensation and weakness. Women are more likely than men to develop this syndrome. The damage to the liver is irreversible if liver cirrhosis progresses to an advanced stage. Although cirrhosis is often irreversible, it is treatable.
