Back pain can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include overuse such as working out or lifting too much, prolonged sitting and lying down, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, or wearing a poorly fitting backpack. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis to cause lower back pain. Spreads down one or both legs, especially if the pain extends below the knee. Unlike back discomfort, it's felt on one or both sides, usually under your rib cage. It's often constant.
